loss of a poet...

Dan Fogelberg dies of cancer at 56 I heard "Another Auld Lang Syne" last night. The wife had on the all-christmas-music station while she hung ornaments. I was thinking about how much I enjoy Fogelberg. That may be his best-known tune, but I always enjoyed "Tullamore Dew" and "Phoenix" better. ("Tullamore Dew" is the instrumental lead-in to "Phoenix" on the CD.)

Oh, no. I knew he was very sick and thought of him from time to time. I loved everything he did. I saw him at The Fox Theater in Atlanta (okay, I camped out for tickets). He performed without a band. He went back and forth between his piano and a stool where he sat to play a guitar. It was one of the most beautiful concerts I've ever attended. He was a big part of the sound track of my twenties.

I'm bummed to hear this. "Wisteria" was my favorite Fogelberg tune. May he RIP.

Here's a copy & paste of a comment I left at Dangerblond's:

...unlike many of his contemporaries (particularly Jackson Browne), I haven’t listened to him much recently. That’s a mistake and I think that at least “Souvenirs”, on which he collaborated with Don Henley, Glenn Frey & Graham Nash, will be under my tree this Christmas. I also get misty at “Same Old Lang Syne” but perhaps even more so with “Run for the Roses”, a song, that would, when played loudly and combined with dancing/rocking and my singing along, soothe my collicky first born’s fussiness like nothing else would.

Born in the valley
And raised in the trees
Of Western Kentucky
On wobbly knees
With mama beside you
To help you along
You’ll soon be a growing up strong.

All the long, lazy mornings
In pastures of green
The sun on your withers
The wind in your mane
Could never prepare you
For what lies ahead
The run for the roses so red –

And it’s run for the roses
As fast as you can
Your fate is delivered
Your moment’s at hand
It’s the chance of a lifetime
In a lifetime of chance
And it’s high time you joined
In the dance
It’s high time you joined
In the dance –
