Open Meetings and Trailers...
Oliver Thomas is wrong to suggest that Mayor Nagan's people meet with the council in ways that skirt the open meetings law:
Thomas suggested a series of three meetings "in the very near future," with Thomas and two of the six other council members attending each session. That format would avoid triggering the state's open-meetings law, which says any meeting involving a quorum of the council must be open to the public.
Anything that has to do with the future of housing in New Orleans should be done out in the open. If white councilmen don't want trailer parks with lots of black folks living in them in their districts, they should say so in public. If black councilmen want to move forward with bringing back the voters who will keep them in office, they should say so in public.
Back-room deals with this lot do nothing to help the rest of the city.
